No, no NET Framework update. And only accounts in Control Panel are my computer's name and Guest.

Can you post the url you are trying to access when you get the pop-up?

OK, it is a function from that site... you still can go in without it.

Even if you uninstall Windows Messenger (I just did on a test system), it will still prompt you.

So it's not my computer, and most likely won't be an annoyance unless I'm on that site?
    That's a relief!!

Thanks so much for all your help!

    Arie,

Is it a popup, in the normal sense, meaning a popup that can be blocked?

No it is not. It's an automated Messnger sign-in, don't think these can't be blocked with a pop-up blocker (although I don't know, since I never used one).

Joe - that is an excellent utility. However, it won't address serenity's issue. It is designed to toggle the messenger service off and on but has nothing to do with Windows Messenger or any other AIM appication.

Messenger service is a utility designed for use on business networks to allow pop-up messages. We use it for things like warning users when we need to take a server down or to warn a specific user of a problem and that he/she needs to call support. But the messages are one-way only. Most home users can simply stop and disable the thing from within services.msc. For those who sometimes need it and sometimes don't, Shoot The Messenger is ideal because it allows you to stop/start the service without having to open services.msc, scroll down to the service, right-click, and stop it or start it.

Windows Messenger does not make use of the messenger service though and could care less if it is on, off, or missing.

It gets confusing with the way these things are named.

This site http://www.dougknox.com/ has a messanger removal tool. I tried it myself and it worked perfectly.
