Acessing files on a WIN XP machine with 98 SE.

I decided to use my old 500 MZ Gateway out in my garage. I decided to just put Windows 98 SE on it since it seems to run at breakneck speeds compared to XP.

The problem is I'm having problems with moving files from one computer to another.

On my Windows 98 SE machine I can access just about any file on my Windows XP machine except for favorites. I can access my shared file folder but I cannot modify anything in it as I could before when using another XP machine.

Also my XP machine doesn't recognize my 98SE machine on the network. Yet my Windows 98SE will recognize it.

Yet both PCs are on the same network (MSHOME).

Any ideas?

My System

Hi Jsea,
I would recreate your network from the Xp machine & use a disk or flashdrive to add the '98 machine to the network, that way it should recognise, as much as windows O/S's are similar they are all different O/S's and need to be told how & who to communicate with & what they are allowed to tell them when it comes to networking.
Regards
Jac

I have the same setup you have described. Two possibilities comes to mind stopping the 98 machine.
1:
You have Netbeui installed on the 98SE machine, if so remove it. (Control Panel\Networking). XP does not have Netbeui installed and will not recognize it and it isn't needed.

2:
Your XP firewall needs to allow a DHCP request from the 98 machine. Simple enough to do. If using the windows firewall create an Exception. Open the Windows firewall settings and click on 'Exceptions', then click on Add Port. Where it says "Name" enter in 'DHCP', where it says 'Port number' enter in 67, and click on UDP. Then click on Change Scope and click on 'My network (subnet) only'.
