    I'm using a Windows 2003 server.

It is currently configured as a file server and a terminal server.

It seems fine browsing the other computers from the network, which uses Windows XP, but the XP PCs can't browse it. But it appears on the My Network Places.

The Server service in Control Panel > Services automatically starts.

When I click the server's icon in Network Places, it prompts an error:

First place to start - and the thing that catches a lot of people out - is to ensure that all PCs on the network use the 2003 server as their primary DNS.

2003 uses DNS name resolution for many processes including authentication. Therefore, if you don't have your PC set to use the server as DNS you get all sorts of problems.

The easiest way to do this is to use DHCP and add the scope option 6 DNS and set it up with the IP address of the server.

In that case you need to set DNS up on the 2003 server and then use forwarders for it pass on external DNS requests to the firewall.

Have a look at this Microsoft guide:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814591

5e in the Configure DNS section is key:

Good deal it's fixed. I was actually thinking in a different direction. I thought maybe the server needed local accounts for each user. Glad you got it fixed. I'm just thinking out loud.
