I have a USB external 300 G drive that I use for backups.

Problem is, its ddrive letter keeps changing. I have named it as W: but I changes to G, J, K etc. I know how to change its drive designation but how to I lock it so it cannot change.\

    Hi tenbob,

Do you unplug the drive from its usb port when not in use and plug some other usb device into the same port?

Or unplug the drive and plug it back into another usb port?

Either one of those actions will give you the symptoms you describe.

The rule for USB ports and devices that you continually use is to use the same USB port and not to use another device in that port.

    Regards - Charles

No I didn't change the USB connection. I do turn off the power to that drive when not used. But why would it go from W to G or I or J. I always have to check before making a backup

    tenbob,

If you don't have 'Tweak UI' (the Microsoft Power Toy utility) download it HERE. After you install it, open Tweak UI, expand 'MyComputer', then select drives. Make sure there is a check by the letter 'W'. This will allow the use of W for a drive letter and it should stick. Otherwise Windows may change it when you reboot. Hope this was it. ;)
