    HI all,

Not sure if this belongs here or in the 'Hardware' section, however I am think it could be system related.

I have [a friends] laptop they no longer want, and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro - 32 bit. The laptop is an ASUS F3 bought around 2006.

The install did take a while but I noticed as soon as it began I could noticeably hear the fan [at least I am sure its the fan] spinning high, then at times it backs down but still it quite noticeable and annoying.

After the install, the fan is always on, spinning and winding. Even without anything additional install, just a bare system, its quite loud and it doesn't stop.

It had Vista on it previously, and the Laptop is a Core Duo 2 Processor with 2GB of RAM.

Initially I thought maybe it was not powerful enough to handle Windows 7, but since it had Vista on it previously, I thought it would handle a 32 bit Windows 7 OS no problem.

I have opened it up and clean as much dust as i could, however it didn't seem all that dirty as I don't think my friends used it that often.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this, and a way I can silence this fan. ???

Just does not seem right to be spinning this noticeably without anything really running?

Did you install the chipset drivers from Asus's web site?

Not yet as (1) this problem was noticeable straight away as I described {have done absolutely nothing after the install completed} and (2) I am still waiting for the drivers disc that came with the laptop from my friends,, though I guess I can try to find them off the ASUS website.

Do you think this could be a possible cause of the constant spinning fan??

Just an update, the ASUS website only shows the driver options that support XP and Vista.

Does this mean Windows 7 is not good for this particular laptop?

Did that and no change, still spins like crazy.

Also, it does not see my network, yet it sees the next door neighbours network?? How can this be? All my other devices see my network.

Is it by any chance the wireless is not being detected due to possibly my modem being in b+g+n mode??

Basically answered my own question, here.. I changed the modem to b+g mode and the laptop picked up the network.

You'll have to check the temperature of the CPU. Either in BIOS (when available) or with 3rd party software.

I might install a program like "Core Temp" and check, however I find it strange that as soon as the boot up process starts it spins like crazy.

There isn't much stuff loaded, as I mentioned its as bare a system as you can get [i have not installed anything yet other the the OS], so i find it hard to believe there is any real reason it the system is making the temps rise that quick.

Only other thing I can think of is that this particular model laptop does not support Windows 7 [well] in that the processor is forced to work hard to load the system in turn making the fan kick in, maybe I am way off, just thinking out aloud.

Installed Real Temps and it shows both cores between 45 - 55 C.

My Dell runs 50 - 60c on a Cooler master cooling pad and is whisper quiet.

    I'm basically stumped.

    Could be a hardware fault??

PS.. I'm in Sydney Australia at the moment and it is the summer months so the air is a little warmer than usual.

45 - 55°C is fine for a laptop CPU and shouldn't make the fan spin like crazy. Sounds link an incompatibility to me.

I would check to see you have the latest BIOS.

    Thanks

I know the BIOS has never been flashed and would be the same when the system was bought new, so I will check it out and try and update to the latest.

The system is over 5 years old, and it was much easier to just leave things as they are as most drivers for Win 7 were not compatible . Upon explaining the problem I had with the fan [perhaps am i use to my system, as it seems so quite] to my friends, they mentioned it has been like that for some time even when they had Vista installed.

Therefore in the end, we decided to leave it running as is, as just a backup laptop for very basic stuff. The noise of the fan most for the most part, annoying is bearable I think.

Thanks guys for the replies, but this one is going into the too hard basket due to the lack of time I have to spend on it.

Have you tried to check the fan heat sensor?

The only thing I did try regarding heat is run RealTemps and as my earlier posts, they seem fine.

Physically I opened up the back and gave it a quick clean of any visible dust. It did not seem to dirty though as it looks like it had not been used regularly. Other than that I am not sure what these heat sensors look like, although, yes i agree, they could be faulty.

In my case, fan had a wire attached to the fan, wire had what looked in size to a small resistor, coloured black. I must point out, that this was found on my computer and may not be a general fitting on any other computer.

    cheers Bobby,

As this aging laptop would only be used as a temp backup for the most basic stuff, I figure its best to just live with it, as it function normally other than the annoying fan noise.

I reckon, [its a friends laptop by the way] by their next upgrade, this one will be banished to the back of the cupboard permanently.
