Last night, my XP SP3 machine rebooted itself around 5 am. This surprised me as I was executing a long running process and did not want the latest updates downloaded or installed. When I checked this morning, the option was changed to Automatic but not by me or any other user. So I lost my information pertaining to the long running process. Is this something that Miscrosoft may have forced? Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Is this the behavior of some virus or rootkit that my machine may have picked up?

Viruses don't want you do have updates.....

MS usually doesn't do things like this... There is an option on their updates web site that if clicked will change the settings.

In the past there have been some updates that "reset" the WAU to "Automatic ", but AFAIK this hasn't been happening recently.

There are also some anti-malware tools, such as Combofix, that will reset many Windows Services to their defaults, e.g auto updates, security center, firewall, etc.

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately any of these issues could have happened. And it doesn't seem that anyone else was having the problem during the last cycle of Microsoft Updates so I think it is prudent to chalk this up to pilot error.
