DSL Modem to Linksys Wireless Router

Kind of puzzled....

My parents just got DSL and they want to use a linksys wireless router in conjunction with the dsl modem.

How do I set the router up?

I have a wireless internet connection to my house and I have a Dell router and my settings are PPPoe. I set that up in the router and works fine. Well...the dsl modem also has PPPoe but you put them into the dsl modem.

When I connect the modem to the router (internet port) and have the router settings as "automatically get ip"...I can't get onto the internet...it automatically displays the modems config page (modem local ip address is set as gateway).

I have connected the modem to the lan port of the router...thinking that it would "pass through"...but no.

Ideas?

Thought I found the solution....but no.

Again....

Have a DSL connection. Setup for the dsl modem is PPPoe. When I plug the ethernet cable from dsl modem to laptop, the dsl modem assigns the laptop with 192.168.1.4 and the dsl modem local ip is x.x.1.1.

Now...I want to use the wireless router (Linksys BEFW11S4). Firmware on router is up-to-date.

How can I get the internet connection to go through the router?

If I select PPPoe as the connection type, put in the username and password...and try to connect...the router can't make a connection.

I am stumped. I guess I am not sure what to do since the username and password is already entered into the dsl modem....then connected to the router in the wan port I don't know what to do for settings.

Nick, it always better to consult the user online manuals or documents. These things are usually located from the manufacturer's website or they may have supplied them with the router you purchased.

Take a straight trough cable and connect it to the Internet port on the back of the router. This is used for the broadband Internet connection. You won't connect it to the LAN ports. You'll connect the computer's to the LAN ports.

To access the Linksys router setup page, open your browser and type 192.168.1.1. Leave username blank and type, in lower case, admin in the password box. This is the default.

Well....this past Saturday morning I messed around with it. I actually used the ISP's online chat with support.

In the Netopia dsl modem, I had to set DHCP/PPPoe, etc as disabled and then plug it into the wireless router. Then in the router I put in the username/password. The support person said I had to create a "bridge" with the modem.

Works great.

Yep because you had a double NAT situation.
Always helpful if you state make and model of the DSL Modem.
Several are comming through now with routing included.
Hindsight is 20/20 but all you needed was a switch or Hub because your DSL box was handeling everything.

True...a switch would have worked, but what about the wireless portion?

Access point but by the time you bought both peices your better off with a wireless router.

I have been through the same thing. One of my business customers had a Caymon DSL Modem/Router and we had to convert it to bridge mode so we could use a real firewall.
