A friend is having the above described problem. Computer is Desktop Windows 10. None of the 365 components (Word, Excel, etc.) open from the system created icons. Selecting "Run as administrator" is the only way to open them. Then not all of the Office files are listed.
As I worked the problem, I noted that Office Home and Student 2007 is installed. I suspect that may be part, if not all of the problem. My plan is to uninstall the 2007 version and then, if necessary, uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft 365.
However, before I do that, I wanted to post here to see if any problems would be created when 2007 is uninstalled.

Outlook, the email program could be an issue if you uninstall. Are they using it and if so, which version.

What are a couple of examples of -> " not all of the Office files are listed" (in particular - what are the file extensions?)

Steve, Thank for the input. They don't use Outlook so I went ahead and uninstalled the Office 2007 version. Restarted the computer and the file issue still existed. We uninstalled Microsoft 365. Restarted and downloaded a fresh Microsoft 365 package. Installed it and all is well. Must have been something in the dual installation that was mucking things up.
